Jasmine Gardens, St. Boniface Hospital
Capital Planning at St. Boniface Hospital retained ft3 to implement a Therapeutic Garden behind the McEwen Building in support of patients enrolled in the hospital’s Mental Health Program.
With emphasis placed on personal wellness and a connection to nature, the design concept of the garden illustrated a safe and accessible outdoor space promoting healing, active wellness, and contemplation.
As quoted by the facilities' Program Director, Sandra Torchia, "A green space devoted to the Mental Health Program will provide our patients with a sanctuary to engage their senses and optimize recovery from conditions such as depression and anxiety by utilizing the restorative values of nature".
Designed for peaceful, grounding strolls, the newly realized Jasmine Garden features an enclosed courtyard composed of pathways that lead patients to various passive and active exterior spaces.
Seating areas nestled between the planned flora offer moments of relaxation, fresh air, and sunlight while an interactive garden area with raised planting beds allows active time in nature and can reduce stress and anxiety.
As physical health and wellness are crucial to mental wellbeing, Jasmine Garden also encourages active recreation through a paved half-sport court for cardio and stationary outdoor fitness equipment for strengthening.
