RiverRun Fitness Trail
The RiverRun Fitness Trail introduces six outdoor fitness stations interspersed along the pathways of Stephen Juba Park in Winnipeg’s historical Exchange District, allowing visitors to stretch, strengthen, and study new movements.
Accessible, public fitness spaces play an essential role in community health and wellness. The fitness stations within the park promote accessibility alongside flexibility to create an enjoyable experience for all fitness levels. Moreover, it reduces barriers (cost, location, and experience), providing equitable and simple opportunities for people to incorporate movement into everyday life.
The placement of the stations follows the park’s existing pathways, ensuring the contemporary design respects and complements the site’s historic character. Spaced at intervals throughout the park, the stations uses a black palette complemented by restrained yet vibrant tones to evoke a sense of playfulness without overwhelming the landscape. At each stop, a “High-Five Zone” sign invites participants to celebrate their efforts with a playful gesture of high-fiving a round steel drum.
The first phase of stations opened in summer 2025, beginning near the Mere Hotel, with a vertical climbing wall and stretching equipment. From there, visitors can move through a variety of activities, including conditioning drills in an open field, strength-building with monkey and parallel bars, balance exercises on colorful rubber safety surfacing, and cardio training with stairs and hill runs. The trail concludes with a climbing rope and bell, giving users the chance to mark their achievement at the finish.
